This quick (okay, maybe not “in 10”, but certainly faster than you think) DIY lampshade makeover elevates a budget buy to bright new heights…

You would think that the fact that a pair of Habitat lamps we scored years ago at 75% off would give us carte blanche to get spendy on the shades, but that really isn’t any fun, and kinda negates the amazing price. So for years they were topped with a simple Ikea shade.

But since moving Social Nesting HQ to Canada and having to rewire the bases, the old shades no longer fit…

Step in Target, and this simple Project 62 rectangular lampshade. Chic in shape and divine in price ($19.99 USD), but a bit plain for us.

Admittedly, the steel-blue lacquer bases were tricky to accommodate. White was too bright, woven neutrals were too “country”, and from a sea of blues, none were quite right.

We needed to add a bit of drama, and aimed to do so with to this stunning marble paper from The Paper Place on Toronto’s Queen Street West.

To cover the shade, we tapped into our dry-mounting skills. Dry mounting involves spray-glueing both the surface you want to paper-cover, and the back of the paper you want to use, waiting for them both to dry, and then carefully sticking them together. Because in this process, when they are stuck, they are stuck.

The paper was only wide enough to cover the front and two sides, but had enough depth for us to cut and secure a cover for the back. The pattern doesn’t match at the back, but they are against a wall so no one will notice…

Plus people will be too busy in awe of the stunning results…

All this talk of Søstrene Grene and the genius of their stationery collection reminded us that we had a few great bits from our last visit. Ten minutes later, we had two new clipboards that hold more than just fond memories…

DIY custom clipboard in 10 minutesThe delight of shopping at Søstrene Grene is that a huge part of their ethos is to surprise people, which means not only does stock change frequently, but so does range. There aren’t always soaps, or stacks of china, or scarves. You have to be lucky and you have to grab while you can, because you never know if what you have your eye on will be there next time. Smart.

So thankfully we nabbed some stationery – primarily these adorable sheets of printed paper – last time we were there. And like so many of the supplies lining our craft cupboard shelves, they were waiting patiently to be used. So it took finding this little painted clip from Michaels that sparked the project.
Painted clip + two sheets of printed paper + a random sheet of MDF = DIY clipboard.

We cut the MDF to about 1.5cm smaller than the paper (all around) and proceeded to glue one sheet to one side of the board.
We then snipped the corners and glued the overhanging edge.

Once dry, we took the second sheet of paper and glued it straight to the other side, let it dry, and trimmed any overhang.
The clip was added and that really was it.

The impact versus the time and cost is a winner on all counts. And we predict that clipboards will be the little black desk accessory for A/W2015.

The bonus, for us at least, was the off-cut of the MDF was a tall and thin length, and we had been smart enough to also buy the painted clip in blue.
And then we spotted the harlequin printed adhesive roll that we also snagged from Søstrene Grene, and repeated the above, but without the glue or drying time. Alas, a second handy clipboard sidekick was done in under five minutes.

A few weeks back I was pushing you men out there to get sewing. As such, I put my needle where my mouth is and decided to do a dandy manly project to show how a little sewing can go a long sartorial way.
Say “hello” man brooch.

And it really is as easy as three supplies (feathered trim, thread, safety pin), two tools (scissors and needle) and ten minutes, but the end result will have people debating whether it’s Lanvin or Louis Vuitton, when the truth is it cost under £5.

Man brooch supplies

So the supplies may require a little bit of sourcing.
I am lucky enough to be near some pretty amazing haberdashers, so coming across 25cm of feathered trim and a giant gold safety pin was easier for me than most. Persevere in your quest. It’s worth it.

For the thread I used the strongest possible nylon. If in doubt, try to break it with your hands. If you can’t, it’s a keeper.

Then I literally folded the end of the feathered trim and sewed through, then folded and sewed, folded and sewed and so on and so on until I ended up with a feathered rosette.

I then sewed the head of the safety pin to the back of the rosette, making sure I could still open and close the pin.

The end result: a super-stylin’ lapel pin primed to jazz up a casual ensemble, add panache to your eveningwear or simply dazzle your entourage and reinforce your position as sartorial kingpin on a night out.

Remember me mackin’ on this Pisaroi raindrop print from Marimekko last year?

… and then all the other raindrop prints out there?
Well – I couldn’t stands it any longer, and decided if the raindrops won’t come to me, then I will have to make it rain myself.

Enter an inexpensive plain white shirt and a trio of fabric markers…

Why wouldn’t I sit down and paint up a shirt?

It was one of the easiest things I have ever done.
I am not going to dare insult you by providing instructions as this is as self-explanatory as it could be, but I will advise that the pens go right through the cotton, so put a sheet of card underneath where you are drawing.

I kept it simple and it looks great…

Really great.

Agreed? Good.
