This quick (okay, maybe not “in 10”, but certainly faster than you think) DIY lampshade makeover elevates a budget buy to bright new heights…

You would think that the fact that a pair of Habitat lamps we scored years ago at 75% off would give us carte blanche to get spendy on the shades, but that really isn’t any fun, and kinda negates the amazing price. So for years they were topped with a simple Ikea shade.

But since moving Social Nesting HQ to Canada and having to rewire the bases, the old shades no longer fit…

Step in Target, and this simple Project 62 rectangular lampshade. Chic in shape and divine in price ($19.99 USD), but a bit plain for us.

Admittedly, the steel-blue lacquer bases were tricky to accommodate. White was too bright, woven neutrals were too “country”, and from a sea of blues, none were quite right.

We needed to add a bit of drama, and aimed to do so with to this stunning marble paper from The Paper Place on Toronto’s Queen Street West.

To cover the shade, we tapped into our dry-mounting skills. Dry mounting involves spray-glueing both the surface you want to paper-cover, and the back of the paper you want to use, waiting for them both to dry, and then carefully sticking them together. Because in this process, when they are stuck, they are stuck.

The paper was only wide enough to cover the front and two sides, but had enough depth for us to cut and secure a cover for the back. The pattern doesn’t match at the back, but they are against a wall so no one will notice…

Plus people will be too busy in awe of the stunning results…

This is the one that sticks…

With easy idea (part one) and cutesy idea (part two) done, it was time to pull out the “less easy but still pretty easy” solution.

Again, from the scraps of my crafting supplies came so patterned fabric left over from a project.

Add to this some double-sided sticky tape, stuck directly to the freshly ironed fabric, and I ended up with my own fabric version of washi tape.

This looked really cool and, while my minded started whirring about all of the future potential applications, I stayed focused long enough to apply three lengths to the lampshade to create the final look, as such:

And that’s it. All three ideas are completely temporary, which I cherish the thought of, so when I get bored, this one will be history too.

Easy option: check!
Now for something slightly more fiddly but adorable.

While the cards idea was cute, it wasn’t delivering enough punch. In perusing my supplies, “punch” came in the form of felt balls that were part of a wonderful gift pack from my friend Mette. (If you don’t have a stash of your own, thank goodness for Etsy, where tons of sellers have these in their shops.)

Next came some sheets of thick felt. Again, remnants from another project and just sitting there waiting to be used. I simply snipped these into tiny triangles.

The fiddly part came in the form of stringing them all together, alternating balls and triangles to make a fun lampshade bunting.

Strung across the shade, the punch was achieved…

Maybe a little bit twee? Yeah. And maybe not quite the look I was hoping to achieve. Next!

One more try is on the cards. Gimme a couple of days to see the winner.

Spruce up one very plain lampshade three ways:
lazy, easy and less easy (but still pretty easy)

Plain. Nowhere near my favourite word nor my favourite state of being. And despite B’s begging, I usually just can’t seem to leave any of our store-bought furniture or home accessories as is.

So I was staring at this lampshade in our living room and thinking:  “How has this escaped me? Why isn’t it feathered, dripping with fringe or ombré? Why is it so (gasp)… plain?”

But I could not spend money on this project – I promised a certain spouse ‘no more buying until I used what I had’. And I do have a lot of stuff just lying around, so I went for a rummage.

The lazy solution was the first way to go. I am not reinventing the wheel here, just reminding people to revisit the wheelhouse. So option one was simple:

Take s few of your favourite postcard and greeting cards, and a handful of playful bulldog clips (paint’em if all you have is the boring kind).

Clip, clip, clip, done.

Not impressed? Yeah – me neither. Thankfully, two more solutions to come, so pop on back when you can. x
