I have really been tasking myself with using the materials, tools and supplies I already have instead of jumping off and buying more…

And when I have been a part of crafting that tool – thus making it all that more meaningful – well, I have just got to maximise the usage.

Feather stamp and fabric

So out came the amazing sugru feather stamp that Christine made for me during our interview, as did glittery gold fabric paint and a heavy cotton twill fabric scrap I had kicking around just waiting for a usage. These thusly came together…

to create a bevy of gold feathers.
I then cut them out and, for added feathery authenticity, threaded the edges by pulling away individual strands,

to create a cool feathery nest of fabric feathers.

But what next?
Well, I have had a couple of branches… real, untreated, straight-from-a-forest branches that were collected on very strict instruction by my then-new boyfriend (now 13-years later husband) that have taken a variety of crafty forms in our home. And they had been purpose-free for a while, so one was just primed for a feathering.

Happily, this used up all of the paint, most of the fabric and one of the branches. Which satisfied my need to put a dent in my supplies pool (and makes room for more… ooops.)

There is nothing more beautiful than the coming together of innovation, talent and a simple idea. Deliver it in gold package and, well, I am head-over-heels in heaven.

A few weeks back, when I went to interview Christine Leech, aside from my trusty reporters cap and pen, I also took a piece of balsa wood, some Sugru and a challenge: design a stamp.

Feather stamp project

As we were there to talk all things printing (including her new book Fresh Prints), I figured I could ask her to use the Sugru – my new favourite craft compound – to make a one-of-a-kind original stamp.

For those who don’t remember Sugru, it’s the amazing self-setting rubber that I talked about here. It’s a hackers dream and I figured it was versatile enough for Christine to add yet another item to her list of easy printing tools.

So off we set, starting with a design. I secretly knew what I wanted so despite playing along with a brainstorm, I just kept saying “a feather?.. what about a feather?.. howsa’bout feather?..” until she gave in.

Christine was an amazing sport, and she drew a kick-ass feather that she quickly started to replicate in Sugru straight on to the balsa wood.

It was brilliant to watch her work at it, especially as Sugru has around a 30-minute window before it begins to set, so she was like lightening, shaping, cutting and poking…

until she ended up with this. WooHOO!

Feather stamp

Over to me and back at home with some white cotton fabric and a pot of metallic gold textile paint…

The idea is to eventually cover a white shirt in gold feathers, but a test is always a worthwhile endeavour.
So with high hopes and a little cheating (via the use of a sponge and cotton buds and repeated tries), I managed a test that worked.

And now I plan to just add shirt.

Hacking is like Hansel… it’s so hot right now.

Never before have so many normal folk been so rampant in their desire and ability to change the everyday items in their lives to make them more “them”. And sure, you can go all 3D-printer with a barrel of cash, or you can go sugru.

I have long looked at sugru with lust in my heart.

Since seeing it on TIME’s top 50 inventions of 2010, I have been so intrigued to dabble.

But what does sugru do? Well – these genius little packets of self-setting rubber were developed to let you repair or enhance most of your stuff simply and affordably. Sugru starts off like putty, air hardens in 30 minutes and cures to a flexible but hard-wearing silicone in 24 hours. It’s a hackers dream come true.

On a practical level, customise the grip on your tools or repair the rusty spots on your dishwasher tray or damaged cables – sugru makes it happen.

Creatively, people are doing some fun stuff too…

And now the clever people at sugru have launched a magnet kit.

Three mini packs of sugru, four magnets and a booklet of neat projects for inspiration, the kit is a great way to put sugru to very practical use. I am so excited but am a bit overwhelmed by what to magnetise first.

There are so many great ideas on sugru’s website, especially for around the house, so do some exploring and get super-inspired to hack your life.
And look out for my first sugru project coming up…
